Pictures

I Know I'm a juvenile with a teenage sense of humor, but these signs make me giggle EVERY time.

I am uploading pictures and calling it a post today.  I gotta see a man about a bike or 50.

LRHG sent me this one with the caption "Is it safe to ride a bike while reading?"  And no helmet to boot.

Cuz Chris sent this one along it is a Bicycle shop Altlandsberg, Germany.  It was titled "You Know When You're Biking and Hit That Wall?"

Not only does he speak Italian, Run a bike shop, and run a team that  swept the 35+ 45+ and 55+ in the New Jersey state road race, but he brings the Gun Show.  Is there any question why he is my Man Crush?

My Life Behind Bars.  I talked about these ducks I saw the other day on the Canal Towpath.  My front tire is pointing right at em.

Lets end on ducks, or more precisely Geese.  I was rolling down the road and saw this dog standing in the creek not two feet away from these geese.  As the kids would say " he is totally creeping up on em"
I tried to call him away but he was having none of that.  The geese didn't seem to give a quack either.

After a couple of minutes the geese moved away.  Mr. dog followed. v e r y  s l o w l y  Again the geese didn't care.  After a bit I left. I wonder how bad they kicked that dog's butt when he ticked them off.

Until Wednesday Quote have fun ride your bike and practice random acts of RADness.

Start the Beg-a-Thon NOW!

I was reminded that it is just about Donut Derby time again.  The time I did the Donut Derby I didn't eat any but I was a domestique.  You don't know what a Donut Derby is?

Alright I'll tell you.  It is a pseudo race.  The rider with the lowest time win's.  Seems normal right?  The twist is that there are two mandatory donut stops.  You get a time deduction for each donut consumed.  The pic above shows the method.  Grab a donut shove it in your face and save the stick.  Hand the sticks in before leaving and they do the arithmetic.

The wrench had pegged this as his goal for the season and he didn't disappoint.  T-Rav didn't want to be left behind so he stepped up as well.  I believe they each ate like 18 donuts and then won there age groups.  Bowe stepped up and ate like 16 donuts but was pipped at the line by the overall winner who ate like two dozen donuts.  The overall winner's got this nice prize...

The other kicker to this was that they had to hold the donuts down.  No barfing aloud.

You may recall that a few weeks ago a good friend of mine was taken by breast cancer.  I wrote about it HERE.  I am taking part in the Tour de Pink.  This is a fundraiser to help support women under 40 who have or had Breast Cancer.  The cause is one I support and I am going to  ride this in the memory of Michelle and my aunt Ginny.  She was over 40 when diagnosed but it still SUCKED.

The ride has a steep fundraising threshold because it's a great cause.  I need to raise $2,500.  So far I have only raised $100.  So it's time to kick this into gear and start begging.  So here is my request....

Please donate to this cause.  I have a fundraising page setup HERE.   If so inclined please click over and donate what you can.  I know we are all tight on funds but every little bit helps.  They show $100 as the minimum but you can donate $1, $5 or $25.  If you have the funds please feel free to donate the full $2,400.  If your company matches donations please help me take some corporate dollars.
This is worthwhile and I will surely beg again.

It's Friday and we are gonna have ideal bicycle riding weather here in the Mid-Atlantic.  Hope where you are Mother Nature smiles on you as well.

Eat Donut's, Ride Bike's and grab life by the bars!

Wednesday Quote

“Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.”  C.S. Lewis

It's that time of the year again.  It has been a hot summer and the rides are becoming less serious (as if they were to begin with).  It is time to enjoy the ride.  I have been taking shorter and more enjoyable rides.  Stopping and looking at stuff.

The other day on the tow path I stopped and saw seven baby ducks huddled together.  It was cool.  Then I looked to the other side and the creek flowing into the river had a bunch of Big freakin fish swimming around.  Stuff I'd have missed if I was going faster.

The issue is that I should be amping my season back up.  If I am going to be participating in any cyclocross endeavors I need to be able to go WFO for 45 minutes before I get my barley reward.  I may reclaim my reputation of being that guy who goes out too hard and vomit's all over himself.  Only time will tell.

In the mean time maybe I'll go out and do intervals..........Probly not.

Maybe this is why the fine folks of the Pacific Northwest are good crosser's.  They get extra vigor and strength with every drop.  May have to go pick up some Rainier.

Automobiles and Unicorns

Putting long miles on the spruck lately has got me thinking about automobiles.  I've never been a "car guy" but if I could choose anything at all to drive maybe I'd choose the Fend Flitzer shown above.  Or maybe I would choose this one for open air motoring.

Sometimes when I'm driving this is what I'm day-dreaming although if a pretty girls driving I'm passenging.  Or maybe I should talk to my shrink and see if it means I think of myself as a women.  Oh Whatever... Just watch it.

While we are on the topic of bikes and cars, have you ever had a day on the bike that you felt like this guy?

The Euro's have WAY better car commercials than us.  We never get fornicating rocks followed by bikini clad cyclists.  I'm not gonna talk to my shrink about this one.  Although maybe I should consult her about the rocks.

Well now that I have completely played out the car commercial featuring bicycles theme for today. It is time to highlight something near and dear to my heart. Unicorns.  I found this one over at AHTBM.  Stevil gets the coolest links.  I cant embed it but click HERE and witness awesomeness. I guarantee it is seven seconds that will add seven seconds to your life.

If you are Facebook inclined check out the My Life Behind Bars Facebook page.  It is sure to keep you enthralled.  It's everything you see here regurgitated over there plus a few random other things.  I am also looking for pictures of your adventures behind bars to post up on the above mentioned facebook page.  So submit away and be assured of instant interweb/facebook fame.  Or at least the possibility of 112 other like minded people looking at your pic's.

Go forth grab Friday by the bars, wrestle it to the ground, and dive headfirst into the weekend.

Wednesday Quote

"Adults are always asking little kids what they want to be when they grow up because they're looking for ideas."  Paula Poundstone

The last few weeks have been at Mach 1 with my hair on fire.  The time has been spent learning a brand new product line, and traveling to meet new and prospective dealers.  Recently I have seen some really well designed bicycle retail spaces.  The attention to detail is excellent, for example, check out the "Bouquet" of flowers above. I also dug this...

The E is actually a stoplight but my phone didnt take a great picture.

There are people turning funky spaces into great retail.  There are also some people who have their eye on customer service.  I am seeing the future of Bicycle Retail and the future is good.

While in D.C. this week I got a chance to try out the newest addition to my demo fleet.  She is a sweet ride.

This is gonna get me ready for some cross racing.  After running every day for an hour and a half last week teaching a young man to ride a two wheeler, I have more confidence that my legs won't cave when I have to skip over barriers.  Yes, I said skip.  That is an indication of how serious I intend to take this so-called racing season.  I'm gonna be in this more for fun than winning.

That and the post race beer.

Lose the Training Wheels

Well... Last week this crazy looking bicycle made me break my golden rule and I ran even though I wasn't being chased.  In fact I was the one doing the chasing.  I was chasing an energetic happy go lucky kid.

If you read this here exercise in narcissism you know that I volunteered for an organization called Lose the Training Wheels.  I along with my eldest daughter was helping teach a boy ride a two wheeler.  Scroll down to last Wednesday's post and get caught up if you care.

I am happy to say that we did it!  We got that boy to ride a bike.  It was one of the most liberating things I have been a part of in a long time.

The process is that you get the child used to pedalling by riding one of the "Roller Bikes" shown above.  Once they get that down they progressively get switched onto more tapered rollers so that they rock onto the side and get the sensation of turning.  Once they have the hang of that one of the instructors takes the child for a ride on a specially designed tandem.

This tandem can be steered from the back.  Note the chain and gear assembly from the front fork to the rear handlebar.  This allows the child to steer but also allows the instructor to correct the steering.  When the boy we were helping got on the tandem on Wednesday I must admit I was tired.  I was sweating through a t-shirt, shorts, and socks every session.   I do believe you could say I was sweating like a prostitute in church.

The child could ride and I knew it but his disability  made it almost impossible to concentrate for any period of time.  He would do great and then forget to steer, or pedal or both, or look up at all.  So as well as being physically tired I was mentally getting exhausted.  I do believe my daughter was at the same point.  Then he came around the gym on the front of that tandem and for the very first time I saw his face.  That smile almost brought me to my knees.

I had only seen his back.  Running behind him offering constant encouragement, real and hidden in commands I wanted him to follow.  Good job looking up (he wasn't looking up), your doing great (he was) Great fall (Golly that looks like it hurt) and so it went for an hour and a half.  But back to that smile, he was having fun.  Truly having fun.  The mental exhaustion left immediately.  I wanted to run behind him and shout encouragement again.

Thursday we got him on two wheels.   First the instructor ran behind him to make sure he was safe.  When he got up and started riding I cant lie tears welled up in my eyes.  I only got a small glimpse into this child's life but this was big time.  I looked next to me and my daughter was doing the same,  We had a great hug, and then learned how to follow him correctly.  The time flew from there.

We were doing "Drunken Sailor" loops around the inside of the gym.  I ran more and harder that day then I have in the last decade combined.  I can ride a century a weekend... but running?  I never stopped because all I could remember was his smile.

Friday we went outside and rode laps around the tennis courts.  The change of venue threw him a bit, but it was also more natural and he took to it.  From the very beginning he would start off riding by saying "OK Lets Go"  It became our starting phrase and I cant stop saying it still.  We also did many laps singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and the ABC song because it seemed to focus him a bit.  But Friday we got a new one.

Part of following the children is not to micro mange their effort.  Allow them to weave and totter.  This let's them recover and gain a sense of balance.  Occasionally actually let them crash but try to minimize it by using the handle.  So Friday doing laps around the tennis court he was doing great.  He took one turn a little close to the fence and clipped it with his bar.  I was able to minimize it and he barely got off the seat.  I reassured him and told him it was a great crash.  He hopped back on the bike but this time after "Ok Lets Go" he added (more to himself) NO FENCE!  we had many more laps of "OK Lets Go No Fence"

When we were finished for the day there was an awards ceremony.  The children received certificates and medals with their names engraved in them.  They were so excited.  It was simply amazing.

He had two other brothers in the class with him.  As I mentioned previously these children's parents were saints.  Really patient caring people.  The mom cooked us all brownies, and zucchini bread muffins.  The muffins were so good I ate two.  I got each of the boy's a book.  Freddy the Frog Rides a Bike, The Berenstein Bears The Bike Lesson, and Curious George Rides a Bike (one of my all time favorites)  My hope is that reading these with their parents will help to make these children lifelong cyclists.  It was as if I had given these kid's gold.  They were so excited.

I would be remiss if I didn't give HUGE shout outs to the instructors and coordinators.  They work their tails off.  It is definitely rewarding, but challenging, and these folks aren't gonna get rich doing this.

That last bit said.... I am certainly going to be hitting some of you shop owners up to help out next time they are in town.  They need the assistance, and it's not why you do it but I would almost insure that you would sell some bicycles as well.

I also have the wheels turning to see how I can tap some of my industry contacts to get these people some support.  A t the very least product.  As you can imagine raising a developmentally challenged child aint cheap.  The program donates bicycles to some of these families.  There has to be a way to get them some bicycles.  So if you are in a position to help and are reading this, please reach out to me.

I didn't take any pictures of the boy I was helping in order to allow him his anonymity, but man I wish I could end this post with a picture of his smile.  It would shine right off of your computer screen.

Until Wednesday Keep the rubber side down, and be glad that you can ride a two wheeler.

Stevie Wonder Saturday

It has been said that Tony Bennett has an amazing voice.  In my humble opinion Stevie Blow's him away here.

Then I saw this version. WOW!  Digging the 70's vibe. I NEED background dancers like these.  Screw Choreography just get your groove on and GO! Yeah Baby Yeah!  WWSD? He would dance!

Yeah that second one takes it. Hands Down.

You can now resume your weekend.

Wednesday Quote Learning to ride

This was MY first bike. Not a hand me down MINE.

“One of the most important days of my life was when I learned to ride a bicycle.”

Michael Palin

Obviously I like to ride bicycles.  I am guessing that the overwhelming majority of you do as well.  As a child my bicycle was my freedom, my escape.  It grew to be my transportation, then my profession.  Many in my life would say, and have said that it's my obsession.

Now try to imagine never having learned to ride a bicycle.  How would your life be different?

Mine would be WAY different that is for sure.  I still remember learning.  My mom running behind me holding me up.  Me saying "do you promise not to let me go?"  Her saying yes, and then letting go, and letting me ride down the street.  Me getting to the end of the street and not being able to turn around.  Hitting that HUGE rock and crashing like only a five year old can.  Catapulting over the bars, pinwheelinig through the air and rolling like a rag doll.  Getting up crying, covered in grass stains, and hopping right back on the bike. That was probably one of the best lies my mother ever told me.

This week I have been volunteering for Lose the Training Wheels.  This is an organization that helps to teach children with disabilities how to ride a bicycle on two wheels.  I learned about this through Selene Yeager Bicycling Magazine's Fit Chick.  I enjoy Selene's writing and view on life.  When I read her account of helping a child learn to ride I knew that I was going to do the same.

Lose the Training Wheels is an organization that teaches children with disabilities how to ride a bicycle.  Learning a bicycle is not easy for these children (as I am finding out).  As Matt the Director of the program explained this is so much more than riding a bicycle.  Riding a bicycle is a road to acceptance for many of these children.  Matt explained that after seven years (yes 7 years) of  teaching his son with many bruises bumps and even broken teeth he could not teach his son to ride.  He gave up.  Then he found this program.  After seven days, not years, his son was riding a bicycle on his own.

He explained that this was a light switch moment for his son.  The light switch turned on and he had a world of possibilities opened to him.  His son was accepted more openly by the kids in the neighborhood.  He can now go ride to the creek and play.  Instead of sitting on the sofa he wants to ride his bike.  Matt explained that exercise was not something his son was into.  Now he is more active and fit.

Matt went onto explain that his son will never be able to drive a car.  The bicycle will allow him to transition into having a job and act as his transportation.  As I have said before the bicycle truly can be a vehicle for change.  The ability to ride one is LITERALLY changing these children's lives.

I started this week and it is amazingly satisfying, hard work.  My eldest daughter agreed to go with me and one of her friends is helping as well.  This time spent with them is so uplifting.  Yes there is hope for the next generation.  These kids want to help and are concerned for the children we are teaching.  I have watched both of them take an active role in making sure that the children we are "teaching" are engaged and progressing.  My daughter has shown me a few tricks to help the child we are working with and it's working.

The boy we are working with is one of three boys from the same family in the program.  These boys parents are wonderful.  It is apparent that they truly care for these boys.  That said,  WOW what a tough job they have.  Keeping these boys focused and on point has got to be exhausting.  Yet the parents are smiling and so thankful.

I will get some pictures of the "Bikes" that they are using to teach with.  They are really cool.  Friday I will tell you about their method of teaching.  In the mean time   I am going to go peddle some bicycles so that I can go teach some children how to pedal some bicycles.

This is a Bicycle Blog

That picture above was taken when I was 13(ish).  Riding bikes has been in my blood for as long as I can remember.  It seems like I have not written about riding in awhile.  So I'm gonna do just that.

This weekend I had some excellent riding.  Saturday was just a good ride. Then Sunday I rode in the Gran Fondo Colnago.  Having ridden in many organized rides in my life I must admit that I am slightly jaded.  You know the deal "A ride is a ride"  Only this ride wasnt a just a ride.  I got lined up in the front row of 1700 people.  Cool, Right?  That's only the beginning.  Being lined up at the front meant that I was behind three Ferrari's and two Ducati's that lead out the ride.  Now that was cool!

Being at the front meant that I had to ride like I belonged there.  I did that for about 45 or 50 minutes.  We rolled out at 27 or 28 miles per hour once the Ferrari's pulled off.  Ironic huh?  The Ferrari's were actually holding us back because they were only there for the parade lap.

I figure that was good Cyclocross training.  I went harder for 45 minutes then I have for a long time.  This will set me up perfectly to be pack fodder at cross races.  I bowed out of the lead group and started enjoying myself.  I rode with several groups.  Some I chatted with some I didn't.

I rode with and changed a flat for a member of the Colnago family. I reunited with a friend of mine who happens to run a little company you may have heard of. CAMPAGNOLO.  Yeah, I'm name dropping, but only to point out that I had a great time.  This also points out that I have made many connections and many lifelong friends in this community of cyclist's.

Also cycling related. Q sent me this cycling video.  Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Friday Prop 8 Quote

"I'm a supporter of gay rights. And not a closet supporter either. From the time I was a kid, I have never been able to understand attacks upon the gay community. There are so many qualities that make up a human being... by the time I get through with all the things that I really admire about people, what they do with their private parts is probably so low on the list that it is irrelevant."  Paul Newman

The man did more than make kickin salad dressing and some darn tasty cookies.  He was before his time in his thinking.

This is probably my first politically oriented post.  I would like to go on the record and say "I don't care what you do in your bedroom"  "I don't care about your religious preference" "I don't care about your political affiliation"  As long as you are not hurting anyone in a manner that they agree to or involved with a minor, It's your business.

If we get to know each other well we can get around to having discussions... eventually.  Otherwise, keep it to yourself.  Be happy, Be safe, Don't harm anyone.

I have friends that I don't share the same opinions with.  It makes for lively conversation and occasionally enlightens me to a different way of seeing things.  We still respect each other and agree to respectfully dis-agree.  That's OK.

This leads me to Prop 8.  If two people want to marry.  Go for it.  As long as you are both of sound mind and can agree too it. Go for it. Again I DON'T CARE.  And not in a bad way.  In my mind in a good way.

This also gives me an opportunity to post THIS LINK

If you are offended by a few curse words, or bigotry, or anti bigotry don't click the link.

If you have a slightly warped sense of humor and agree with the sentiments posted above click away and chuckle.

Have a fantastic weekend.  I am going to ride my bike, build some new bicycles, and enjoy the company of friends.  Hopefully you do what makes you happy.

Wednesday Quote Cinematic Edition

It's been awhile since I posted a black and white photo at the top and I like them SO even if it doesn't have anything to do with today's rambling I'm doing it.  After all pictures of pretty girls on bicycles is never a bad thing in my opinion.

"Opinions are like A*#holes everyone has one and they all stink."  My Grandfather

My grandfather had a few good ones like that he would use from time to time.  It may sound like something from Sh*t my dad says but that was just my childhood.  Pop-pop was cool like that.

I got to thinking about that quote because the fine folks over at Bicycling magazine did a story on the 9 cycling movies you cant miss.  Now the fine folks over at My Life Behind bars (that's me) did a similar post back in April of this year.

While I did not choose 9 movies I did rattle off 3.  They only chose 2 of those leaving out the cheesiest of all 80's cycling flicks Quicksilver.  They did include the movie Key Exchange which I had never even heard of.  I guess I am going to have to watch another crappy 80's bike movie and check it out.

They also included The Triplets of Belleville.  This is a fantastic quirky movie with a great soundtrack.  Just thinking about it I'm gonna go dig out the CD and load it into my Itunes.

This song will most likely get stuck in your head.

The conclusion of Bicycling magazine was the same as mine.  The Greatest Bicycle movie of ALL TIME is Pee Wee's Big Adventure.  Who can argue with a movie that is about a boy and his bike. It amuses me that my fancy webtraffic reporting thingie tells  me that the most referrals I get from Google are for "Pee Wee Herman" or for this picture I posted once of Pee Wee

Pee Wee Herman Stencil by Wildabeast 76

Time to go get my butt handed to me on the bicycle.  Au Revoir

Drumroll Please

Well this is starting to feel a bit like I am that neighbor from the 1970's that returned home from a vacation and insisted on clearing off the table and showing home movies and slides on an empty living room wall.

It's a good thing that this is my narcissistic rambling web-log thingie because I am going to share some of my favorite pictures from the final stage of the  Tour Day France (official Bob Roll pronunciation)

Sunday July 25th started off like most Sunday's.  I got up had a croissant and headed out for a walk.  (Didn't have a bike I and I sure as heck wasn't going running)

I passed this

Then decided to check this out.  I figured ahh what the hell.  When In Paris...

The View Didn't disappoint.

So after this ordinary morning I figured that I would continue with my normal routine and go with a few friends .

Check in with some pretty girls.

Snag a nice gift.

Eat a gourmet meal

And have a front row seat for the spectacle

But this was what I was here for...

Yeah thats a fuzzy shot of El Pistolero/Shooter Mcgee

Fuzzy shot of Petacchi in his multi colored green outfit.  It would be nice if they all consulted the pantone color guide to get together on the same page.  They took what could have been a cool kit and made it ummmmm not so cool.

Alright to ditch the aloof wish I was cool guy demeanor... This was a BIKE DORKS DREAM.  I was able to watch every bit of the last stage in complete luxury.  Even when the riders werent in front of me I had my choice of  T.V.'s  or the jumbotron

I am gonna go on the record and say that I live pretty well.

Now to keep things real......

Wanna buy some bicycles?
