Snow Biking

Chris's Life Behind Bars was hiking with his bike on his shoulder. And yes that is a Ralph Wiggum action figure turned stem cap.
It seems a little (Two plus feet) of snow cant keep some of the fine folks in the North East from riding. Or as it turns out from attempting to ride. Chris ended up carrying his bike through the Wissahickon. But he and some fine folks got in a nice snow hike.

Fatmarc, T-Rav and many other fine folks went down to the farm in Leesburg to race Snotcycle. If you read up on Fatmarc's account of the race it turned out to be not much of a race. Sounded like a good excuse to drink beer though. As T-Rav put it "Average beer gets better with good people" Let's face it the socializing is often as good (sometimes better) than the riding.

Saturday it was lightly snowing through the afternoon but still hovering around 30 degrees. I took the opportunity to grab a quick road ride. The Cyclocross bike was the correct tool for the job since there was still some snow on the road and drifted in places.

It was great and sure beat the rollers. Friday Evening I started out to do an hour on the rollers. I only made it half an hour and got off three times. NOT feeling it.

I'd rather be bundled like this..... Then ride nowhere on aluminum drums.

Plus I get to see cool stuff like this.

And to take a complete 270 degree turn I figured I would share this gem before I sign off.

My thirteen year old sense of humor at work.

Stevie Wonder Saturday Dance and Shout

This one of "Little" Stevie Wonder is classic. I wonder what T.V. show this came from? I'm betting that this song is running through the next guy's head as he gets his groove on.

I wish my granfather got down like that. Or maybe not.

Only this wasn't a prize I particularly wanted. For those unfamiliar with city riding and the Door Prize, it is when someone opens their door to get out at the same time you are going past and you slam into said door. My Door Prize totalled my bike. Bent the top and down tube and pushed the fork in. Being young and dumb I figured I could ride it. The shop I got it from suggested I go see Harry since he was a framebuilder. That is a Vitus. One of the first commercially available aluminum bikes. It was bonded together not welded and the designers of the day would not go to oversize aluminum. The adage that early aluminum bikes were stiff certainly didn't come from these bicycles. Harry also had the exclusive distribution rights to Vitus tubing in America. Fixing those bicycles kept the shop busy and supplied a constant supply of work for us. One year while we were displaying at Interbike we split a booth with Vitus France. The president of Vitus told us directly that Sean Kelly would often go through several frames a month since they would flex so much after his leg's tore them apart. He said that for a race like Paris Roubaix the frame would be done afterward. The pictures of Sean Kelly's face covered in mud are still some of the coolest ones I can remember.

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; Martin Luther King, Jr

Often when I am asked how I am doing my response is "I am living the dream". This may be an ever changing dream and reality. It may or may not have something to do with Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream" vision. Truly it depends on the day.

Reading some of the many MLK quotes I could have used today lead me to read that famous speech. Wow MLK was one smart and prophetic dude. That speech definitely will make you pause. It makes me pause because it made me think even more about a thought that has been predominant lately.

This is a long way to go for a point but stick with me. Of course this should make me want to jump to action to help others. It does in a way but being human I look out for myself and my needs first. A wise person I heard once said that in every act of goodwill is some selfish motivation.

So how can I help myself grow personally and professionally while still helping others? Specifically the question I have been asking myself is how can I help spread Passion with the Velo as the "Vehicle for Learning". More specifically how can I spread this passion and not go broke.

I currently do this, Peddling Pedaling. Or in real English, selling bicycles. Selling bicycles gets more butt's on saddles and requires more than just the act of putting a bicycle into someones hands. There are countless opportunities to work events, attend rides or races, and be that "Bike Guy" when somebody is looking for guidance. I enjoy all of these opportunities.

Often times I enjoy the interaction with bike people more than the actual bike. Other time's I enjoy the solitude and efficiency of the machine more. But I always come full circle to knowing that the bicycle has made it possible for me to "Live the Dream" I am thankful that the dream is ever-changing and I keep wanting to chase it.

When I sat down at the keyboard I had a completely different agenda. I was going to tell you some stories about the Limekiln CX race past Saturday. I will do that Friday. There are a few good pictures to go with that as well. Reading MLK's speech and quotes totally derailed me.

The idea that we should all live our lives with passion and not put our dreams and hopes to rest in order to make a living has been one of the basic pillars of my life. As I see some pillars crumble and others erected in their place this one has remained constant.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank whoever invented the bicycle. The bicycle has taken me away from problems and brought me to solutions. It has helped me make friends and been a lifelong companion. The bicycle has provided a comfortable life for me and mine.

Going to work everyday is a great way to help preach the gospel of the velo and spread the word. This blog is an extension of that. There are countless other ways to spread this passion. One of these is going to be a new feature on Velorambling.com coming soon. More are to be written.
So the natural thing to do tomorrow is race cross. I bet they were hoping for this when they scheduled the race. This has been on the radar for awhile and should be a good opportunity to throwdown with the cool kids of Emmaus.

If you are Facebook friends with a bunch of cyclists you may have seen this next clip. If you haven't then feast your eyes. And while you are at it bookmark Michael Barry's Blog. I read Inside the Postal Bus his insider look at racing the pro tour and enjoyed it, so it should be no surprise that his blog is good. I spent quite a bit of time reading past posts. It was worth it. Now watch.

As Mr Lepping pointed out to me, the speed limit posted at the top of that road is 30 KPH (18 MPH). This is what he would envision the peloton looking like from above. I agree with the blandness but it would have a bit more blue. Added to the blue of Team Sky the new LEOPARD TREK (you should read the Neils account of this spelling) Garmin-Cervelo, Astana and now Movistar has come to my attention. So the red is out and the blue is in. Of interest to me is that Francisco Ventoso has been signed to the team. Francisco is one of my favorite if not my favorite Pro. I spent a fair amount of time with him when he was at Saunier Duval and even with the language barrier we got along well. A good dude. Look for him at the front of the Pro Tour Sprints. Homeboy is quick, you have to be in order to win Paris Brussels among other big races.

In exciting news cyclingnews.com has decided to follow my lead and Chasing Wheel's. They have published an overview and critique of the 2011 pro team kits. Granted their's is more thorough and it's almost like professional writers wrote the thing...but it should be. Since they get paid for this. A good bet that it was written at someones kitchen table though, just like this one.

I must be spending too much time not riding or staring at the shelves in my basement while on my rollers because the riding video's are speaking to me.

This one is simply amazing. We know that many girls like to see what's inside the baby blue package--insert your own innuendo's.

As far as I understand the concept behind team sponsorship is about branding. The goal is to get recognition for a product or service via cycling. For the most part team sponsorship is not so much about the love of cycling as it is an advertising expense. There are exceptions such as the altruistic vision of the the Leopard portion of the Leopard-Trek sponsorship. But these are rare and still convoluted. Why Astana sponsors a team is a bit of a mystery but it certainly generates interest and awareness of the region. That's probably the answer.

For those of us in the states who follow cycling we are in the minority. We know the teams and players but the person standing next to you in the grocery store is more likely to know who Donovan McNabb is than Tom Boonen. In Europe it is a different scenario all together, cycling is in the sports pages everyday. Winners of prestigious races grace the covers of magazines and newspapers, and they make the nightly news highlights. Ask most Americans who Jan Ullrich is and you will get a blank stare.
I have often said to anyone who will listen (or the wall if I'm talking to myself) that professional cycling is an inexpensive advertising vehicle. Of course that is all relative. If you were a major corporation and stepped in with $10 Million you could get naming rights to a team and exposure for a year. Or you could buy a one minute Super Bowl commercial that costs several million dollars to make.

The point of this rambling diatribe is to get this bang for your buck, you should be distinctive. Team Sky, Garmin-Cervelo, and Team Leopard-Trek are all similar. Astana has a similar shade and Saxo Bank Sungard is running a blue theme even. How are these teams going to be distinctive in a mass of 200 riders rolling down the road en masse? I can here Phil and Paul confusing them right now.

Lets take a look, first up Team Sky. They were the first to use the black and blue combo. Is imitation the sincerest form of flattery? If so Team Sky should be flattered.

Team Sky from the Tour Quatar. Swiped from their official website.

Next up Garmin-Cervelo, gone is the majority of the argyle. It appears in the blue.
